Indoor Recreational Facility

heating unit for indoor sports facility

FACILITY: Indoor Family Sports Center - New York

PROBLEMS:

  • Heat/ventilate an 80,000 sq. ft insulated metal building used for a wide variety of indoor sports and family oriented recreational activities.
  • Fresh outside air required to maintain good indoor air quality.
  • HVAC equipment cannot interfere with the sports activities.
  • Building owner needs to maximize use of valuable floor space to increase the facility's revenue potential.
  • Contractor wants to avoid piercing the roof structure to minimize installation costs.
  • Temporary indoor heat needed during winter construction.
  • Must have energy efficient system to offset rising utility costs.

SOLUTIONS:

  • The general contractor (metal builder) originally considered an indirect gas-fired, floor mounted, air rotation type heating unit. However it took up too much floor space, required flues that pierced the roof and it was not the most energy efficient way to both heat and maintain good indoor air quality for this sports facility.
  • A Cambridge, S-Series Blow-Thru® Space heating system was specified. It is available with 5 different mounting options, including indoor or outdoor vertical mounting to the wall, but the popular thru-the-wall option was selected.

RESULTS:

  • Installed cost for a direct gas-fired, Cambridge thru-the-wall space heater was much lower than what the contractor would have faced with a larger, indirect gas-fired air rotation heating system.
  • Temporary heat was provided during the winter construction period.
  • Great indoor air quality was achieved with warm balanced temperatures throughout the building.
  • Lower gas and electric bills means continued savings over time for the building owner.
  • The Cambridge heating unit kept a "low profile". It did not interfere with any sports activities and provided the building owner with maximum useable floor space.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS:

The General Contractor (Metal Builder) said:

  • " The introduction of 100% fresh air is an important consideration for indoor air quality (IAQ) in all applications, but it's absolutely critical in a building designed for indoor sports. The air quality achieved in this facility has been great!"

  • " I literally had 'instant heat' with the Cambridge Blow-Thru® system: one day set-up, one day to get the gas to the unit and we were ready to go."

  • " Dealing with your Service Department during start-up was a great experience. You get an A+"

  • " Cambridge is a tap-in for heating future buildings for us"
